4.5 stars – I loved it!! It was amazing! Is a new favourite! Almost perfect!
After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.
Now, it’s the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie’s only hope for rescuing her brother–or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.
Oh My Mother Flying (*only not flying*) God.
Okay I think I had expectations going into this book that it was going to be good, but nothing overly special. But HELLS NO I WAS WRONG!!!! This book is straight up amazing!! The pacing, the characters, the world, the mystery!!! All of it worked so well together to create THIS EPIC BOOK I. COULD. NOT. STOP. READING.
The way Rick wrote about the world in this book made it a palpable thing! You’re completely immersed in the all-consuming fear and unknown of the world. You as well as the character have no idea what’s going to happen, and who the bad guys are! It was so exciting!!!!
The characters are of this book are fantastic!!! I thought going into this book it was a one person POV, but there are actually two main protagonist and then we also get snap shots into other characters’ lives as well!! Cassie is pretty damn kickass!! I imagine her as a Rey from Star Wars type character like ‘WTF you doing?? I don’t need you to hold my hand to run’. Like completely badass and independent! But she is also so caring towards her brother, and its super sweet! The other main character is Ben. Ben (for reason’s I won’t explain because duh spoilers) is a solider and I pretty much LOVE. I totally ship him and Cassie even though I’m like 50% sure that isn’t going to happen (still like 50% sure that it might! I’m just don’t know how we’re going to get rid of a certain alien first). He’s so much like Cassie as well, kick ass but still caring. (That’s obviously a winning pair for me!). Sammy is Cassie’s younger brother, and although we only got one section in his POV I have decided he is my favourite character!! HE’S SUCH A CUTIE!!!!!!! Like walking around with his bear, trusting all the adults! LIKE JUST ADORABLE!! Evan, is the last character we get a POV from. I must admit that me and Evan do not mesh well – for one, he is super creepy and stalkerish (this is sort of romantised in the book, but just NO). For two, he’s not exactly human (wink). Three, he’s so damn controlling!! Like this is how a conversation between him and Cassie goes:
Cassie: ‘I’m going to do this thing’
Evan: ‘No you’re not’
Cassie: ‘Why not?’
Evan: ‘Because I said so’
Cassie: ‘Eff off! I’m doing it anyways’
Evan: ‘FINE! BUT I am going to be following you from a distance and you won’t know I’m there!’
See I am not team Evan! I am team Dump Evan!
The action in this book is so thrilling!! It was like constant EXCITING THINGS HAPPENING!!! I have read reviews where people have said they thought the pacing of the book was off (these people also liked Evan – so idk if I’d trust them 😉 ) but to me the pacing was spot on! If something slower was happening with Cassie at a time, it was balanced out by something super exciting happening with Ben and vice versa. There are some truly SHOCKING bits in this book! Like, SO SHOCKING! What the 5th Wave is blew my mind! Now that I know what it is I can think back and know how ingeniously Rick weaved hints into the story! There are also a lot of very confronting and gory bits to this book (is it totally fucked up of me that they we’re some of the most exciting haha).
The romance in this book was a no go for me though. I’m sorry, but I don’t care how hard people try to romantise aliens, the self-preservation side of me refuses to think of them as nothing but – oh I don’t know – EXTRATERRESTRIAL THINGS HERE TO KILL US ALL.
Overall I totally loved this book!!! I can’t wait to read the sequel! I’m hoping to buy it really soon – maybe next month! The action and characters made this book superb and if you haven’t read it yet because you’ve been sitting on the fence about it, JUST DO IT!!!
Now as I’m sure you know, The 5th Wave movie is out (at least it is in Australia) so that’s why I HAD to read the book before seeing the movie – which I’m seeing later today (btw, it’s the 17th when I’m writing this review). I’m going to post a Book to Screen Adaption review the day after this review goes up! So be on the lookout for it! Here are a list of things I’m really hoping the movie provides!
- It be as much Ben’s story as Cassie’s – I want almost equal screen time between them both
- It to follow the book – lol probably won’t happen but a girl can dream
- The 5th Wave to be a huge surprise – when the 5th wave is figured out in the book it’s like a massive shock, I want it to be as equally shocking in the movie
- Sammy to be uber cute – I haven’t checked out the casting for the film (except I know Chloe Grace Moretz is playing Cassie)
- To be super unsure about Evan – I don’t want to just love him or hate him, I want the movie people to make his character ambiguous.
- To have the scene in Camp Haven where the kids have to do **that very fucked up thing**
