The Sword of Summer (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard #1) by Rick Riordan // Adventure & Hilariousness !! YES PLEASE

4 stars

4 stars – It is really really really fantastic!! I loved reading it!synopsis

Magnus Chase has always been a troubled kid. Since his mother’s mysterious death, he’s lived alone on the streets of Boston, surviving by his wits, keeping one step ahead of the police and the truant officers.

One day, he’s tracked down by a man he’s never met—a man his mother claimed was dangerous. The man tells him an impossible secret: Magnus is the son of a Norse god.

The Viking myths are true. The gods of Asgard are preparing for war. Trolls, giants and worse monsters are stirring for doomsday. To prevent Ragnarok, Magnus must search the Nine Worlds for a weapon that has been lost for thousands of years.

When an attack by fire giants forces him to choose between his own safety and the lives of hundreds of innocents, Magnus makes a fatal decision.

Sometimes, the only way to start a new life is to die . . .reveiw

Question: Why did I ever stop reading Rick Riordan books?????

Honestly… WHY?

This book was so much fun! Like just a ball of adventure and hilariousness!! I feel like energised after finishing this book because it just puts you in such a good mood! Rick Riordan has this vibe to his writing style that just shines through every book he writes and it truly is a magical thing!

I’ve heard Sword of Summer be compared to PJ, but if there were any close comparisons, they just kind of flew right over my head (I haven’t read a PJ book since I was like 13ish after all). All the characters felt fresh and unique. I loved that this was 100% an adventure novel, there wasn’t romance, there wasn’t teenage angst, it was just bang, bang, BANG! adventure.

I actually think I may be a bigger fan of Magnus then of Percy (but then again this is only the first book so we’ll have to wait and see). Magnus was so witty and chill. He rolls with the punches as they come and always manages to have a completely time-inappropriate one liner to lighten the mood. Plus I like that he’s a lot more mature, since everything he has to go through with his mum and living on the street.

The side characters in Sword of Summer we’re also fantastic! Samarah is a Muslim girl from a very traditional family, who midnights as a Valkryrie (which tbh I’m still not 100% sure what that is?). She’s completely heads over heals for the guy she’s arranged to marry. THUMBS UP FOR DIVERSITY RICK! And also I loved how the concept of being totally okay and excited for an arranged marriage was raised! There’s entire cultures where this is a totally normal practise, and it’s only us Westerns who have a problem with it. By including this I just feel like Rick helped expand some readers understanding. Which just so you know, I personally go gaga for YA that slot in social educational messages!!! (That sounds like the most mum bumper sticker ever HAHA!)

Two other note worthy side characters are Blitz and Hearth! Now I know these two are only the best of friends but… I totally ship them. I CAN’T HELP IT! I have Shipism [Shipism; noun; to have an uncontrollable urge to ship every character duo you believe would make a beautiful couple] I need to go to SA (Shipism Anonymous). Blitz is a dwarf who’s greatest passion in life is clothing. DOESN’T HE JUST SOUND FABULOUS! Hearth is an elf who just wants to practise rune magic! THESE TWO ARE ACTUALLY HILAROUS! They bicker like an old married couple and get themselves into the worst situations!

Just like PJ all the Norse gods we meet are so quirky and ingenious! Gotta admit though, that I was disappointed Thor didn’t look like Chris Hemsworth. I feel like I’m actually getting an education in Norse gods as well while reading this book! I didn’t even know there was a god Frey! Nor did I have any idea the Norse were rumoured to have travelled to America before the English. LEARNING SO MUCH! Who needs school? I have YA!

And finally maybe the best part of this book… it is so flipping funny! Like jezz, I can’t. The situations they get into are just ridiculous! The converstaions they have, have you just like ‘Someone please explain what is going on!’ (but in the best way possible), the chapter headings are fabulous (eg. You Had One Job, Thou Shalt Not Poop on the Head of Art, A Lovely Homicidal Sunset Cruise). This book is just endless lols and I was having a blast!

Overall, I am so keen to go read everything by Rick Riordan that I’ve yet to read! His writing is just entrapping it’s so entertaining! All the characters where so enjoyable and the adventure was non stop! Am super excited for the sequel!

  2. The Jason Grace chapter heading was my favourite. Rick Riordan literally just shaded himself, it was amazing! It’s been so long since I read a book this funny XD It’s great to hear you liked it too!

Okay I need to read this book, like now. I was hesitant because I was afraid it would compare unfavorably to Percy Jackson, but you said you like Magnus Chase maybe more…?! And I’m super glad Rick keeps his trademark fun and humor and adventure 🙂
