Book to Screen Adaption Review: The Martian by Andy Weir

You can see my review of The Martian here 🙂

I went and saw The Martian the movie a couple of days after finishing the book so it was all fresh in my mind and I got to say I think they did a pretty brilliant job of it!! As usual with adaptions a lot was left out but, in no way a badly done movie! The movie follows the book pretty damn accurately, even some of the dialogue was pulled straight out of the book.

I watched a Buzzfeed video  were they got a NASA scientist to review the movie and the scientist said that all the stuff Mark does is pretty accurate to how it would happen on mars. Just proving that Weir is a brilliant researcher!! Like, all the scientific journals he would have had to have read to be able to make this story so accurute that a NASA scientist is saying that it is pretty spot on blows my mind!

The casting for this movie is On Point! Like, so, so well done!! I think Matt Damon makes a brilliant Mark Watney, and that Jeff Daniels plays Teddy so bloody well!!! Even people like Kate Mara, was such a great Johanssen! I was so happy with everyone!!

So this next part may be a tad spoilery, so if you haven’t seen the movie or read the book skip this next paragraph! I hated how they changed the ending! It wasn’t like drastically changed but, to me at least, the most suspenseful part of the book was his drive from Areas 3 to Areas 4 because of things like him not being able to communicate to NASA, the rover flipping and the dust storm but all three things were cut from the movie. I just think it was a bad decision and would have rather if they stayed in. Also, at the end when Mark actually did the Iron Man move that he only jokes about making in the book had me kind of rolling my eyes. It was a tad ridiculous.

I loved how they put a bit of an epilogue in the movie!! When I finished the book, I flipped to the next page expecting to read an epilogue or something and was kind of disappointed that it just ended. SO I was beyond happy to see a snap shot into Mark’s future once he’s back on earth. It was the perfect ending to the movie!

Overall, this really was a very well done adaption! It stays true to the book for the majority of the story and the casting is spot on. I really, really loved this movie and can’t wait to see it again!
