WHO KNEW I WAS SUCH A FAN OF SCIENCE FICTION??!! Certainly not me! But holy shit I loved this book!! I didn’t want to put it down! I think I was so drawn in because it felt so fresh and new to me. I’ve never read a heavy science fiction book before – I’ve only dabbled in light YA science fiction – and the writing, setting and suspensefulness (yes, I know that isn’t a word) was just so exciting to me!

Mark is one of the most fantastic characters EVER! Okay I have read smart characters before, but Mark takes the cake. I had straight up no clue what he was talking about a lot of the time, but I got the generally gist of it. It seriously felt like I might have been getting smarter reading this book. Like, for instance (I don’t know if this was really dumb of me) but I had no idea you could make water out of air! Not like precipitation, but like out of the air!! My little brain was blown! And now I’m like 60% confident I could make water myself if I’m ever stuck on Mars!! I had heard going into this book that Mark is an hilarious character, but I got to admit, I wasn’t really laughing throughout this book. Instead I was like smirking at Mark’s utter sass. He’s like the sass King. I really, really enjoyed Mark, which is so bloody good considering that 85% of the book is just him!

I did also really enjoy the side characters, like Teddy, Mitch and Venkat I think giving readers the other side of this story was such a brilliant plan. I loved to read them and what they’re going through to try and save this one man. I have to admit sometimes I got them all, and their respective departments confused but still I don’t think this book would have been as awesome without them and all the other side characters.

This book is so bloody suspenseful. LIKE KILL ME NOW BECAUSE I JUST CAN’T HANDLE IT, SUSPENSEFUL. Like seriously, I don’t want to spoil anything about the book, but I think something went wrong for Mark every twenty pages. Like, Mars is the worst planet in the solar system, I believe after reading this book that Mar’s was actually foiling his plans on purpose! I had made the mistake of  watching the movie trailer before, reading the book so I knew that some of the things were going to happen, but the stuff I wasn’t expecting just made me so upset for Mark!! Mar’s is a dick.

This is the most technical book I have ever read, just to think about all the research Weir did is incredible! Like, that man must have been working on this book for years. I actually googled to see if Weir is an astrologist or something, but no, he’s just a brilliant dedicated writer. I loved it!

Overall, I legit LOVED this book!! It’s beyond a doubt a 5 star read! If anyone reading this review is like me and never really picked up a heavy science fiction book before, THIS SHOULD BE THE ONE YOU TRY!!

I went and saw the movie (which is brilliant btw) and I’m planning on writing a movie review that I’ll post in a couple of days 🙂

Add me on Goodreads 🙂

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. I keep trying to make everyone I know read it! I’m going to see the movie in a couple of weeks and I’m looking forward to it – I’ll look out for your review of that too! 🙂

OMG SO BASICALLY I WANT TO READ THIS. I haven’t really read much sci-fi either…but he’s sassy?!?! I AM SO DOWN FOR THIS. I love sassy characters, no matter the genre. XD And I’m such a sheep, but I always want to read the books that are going crazy around the internet, and I see this one everywhere at the moment!!
Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!
