4.5 stars

Can we just quickly talk about how much of a straight up idiot I am for not having read this book sooner????????????? Like, why not Amy?? Actually I know why, until like 2 months ago I thought it was about zombies. Don’t ask me why I thought that (maybe because of the cover) – I really don’t know? But now I’m stuck kicking myself for not picking it up sooner!!!! Becky Albertalli, I will read anything you want to write!!!!!! I was actually so upset when this book ended I just wanted it to keep going.

This may be the most Tumblr book to ever exist! Like, you just know Albertalli is a Tumblr queen! Tumblr lovers have a certain vocabulary and outlook on life – which I absolutely love and admire – and then Albertalli went and wrote an entire book in this style!!! Simon and his friends are written in the perfect representation of Tumblr users – like, Albertalli seriously nailed making these characters authentic! The way they embraced situations, their dialogue, their sass and snark, and ability to be entirely original – they are so Tumblr and I couldn’t help but flipping love it!!

This book made my heart happy, it was so charming and cute. It’s quoted from Teen Vogue on the cover that say’s this book is “The love child of John Green and Rainbow Rowell” and I swear nothing can be more accurate.

I loved Simon – like oh my goodness!!! CAN WE BE FRIENDS????? He’s sweet, nerdy, funny and so loyal. I was rooting for him to have a happily ever the entirety of the book! I love how he can find a redeemable quality in everybody, even in someone who isn’t necessarily a great person. Reading his feelings for Blue, finding himself falling in love with a guy who he only knows through emails, being conflicted between wanting more and not wanting to rock the boat were so heart warming!!

I love different formatting in books and found reading Simon and Blue’s emails to be so, so entertaining! I loved their conversations, helping each other deal with deeper issues while ALWAYS being so funny!!! Plus as they got progressively more flirtatious I was BLOODY LOVING IT!!  My favourite part of this book hands down was the ending once Simon and Blue had meet and are just so cute and together and ASHFSKJDHFASKJH! I wanted like 100 more pages of them being together! I loved this book as a standalone but if I could wish it into existence I’d want a sequel completely about Blue and Simon being together!! (BTW, I totally worked out who Blue was and felt like Nancy Drew when I got it right! I am a super sleuth!!)

This book has perfect family and friendship dynamics – which is always an A++!! Simon’s friends and himself are so realistic – they go through ups and downs but they are always 100% there for one another! Simon’s family are literally hilarious and so supportive of Simon!!! Plus, I loved how he such a good relationship with his sisters! Is it just me or does it feel that YA contemporary rarely has a protagonist with siblings they can depend on???

This book is so damn quotable!!! All the quotes about sexuality, friendship, family, love I want to just write down and never forget. Becky Albertalli – you are a word smith!!!

“White shouldn’t be the default any more than straight should be the default. There shouldn’t even be a default.”

“The way I feel about him is like a heartbeat – soft and persistent, underlying everything”

Add me on Goodreads 🙂

About Amy

I'm an 20 year old uni student who majors in procrastinating. It's wonderful really - many a great read was read because of it.
