In The Afterlight (The Darkest Minds #3) by Alexandra Bracken

5 stars

**WILL contain spoilers from the previous books in the series – you have been warned**

Can I just start by saying, that In The Afterlight may just be the best series concluding book I have ever read. It was actually perfect, no rushed, unbelievable storylines to get loose ends tied up, nothing important left unanswered, characters readers love gets a happily ever after. I LOVED IT. But at the same time I loved that perfect ending to an amazing series I’m still like…

Because it’s over for good now. There’s no more Ruby, Liam, Chubs, Vida or Zu every again!! What am I to do??

I honestly don’t know how to write this review without spoiling anything so it main contain some minor spoilers.

Bracken deserves a medal for how awesomely she wrote In The Afterlight. I’ve learnt from her past books to never trust Bracken not to do something evil to one of my favourite characters and emotional crush me so when she forced me to get onto the emotional rollercoaster again, I wasn’t that surprised. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt. I actually threw my book at one stage and went and told my whole family (who have never read The Darkest Minds series and had no idea what I was going on about) that I straight up think Bracken is a sadists. I thought I was shattered when Jude died at the end of Never Fade, but that was nothing compared to the devastation I felt at one part through this book. I honestly will never be able to read an Alexandra Bracken book again without going in already expecting the worst.

Without giving anything away this book focuses mainly on the rebellion we’ve been reading up to in the previous books, and I think through that process all the characters grow so much in this book. I think everyone finally comes into the person they were always supposed to be. They all venture out of their shell and grow. Even Clancy! (I know that’s hard to believe). My opinion on Clancy changed a lot in this book, don’t get me wrong he’s still a prick but he’s also the first person to think he’s abilities aren’t something horrible to get rid of (which us reader have known from the start), plus you learn a lot about him and why he is the horrible person he is.

Liam and Ruby are, like always, perfect together. I love reading them together, they are one of my favourite book couples and Liam is like the sweetest, loveliest guy ever!!

I am truly so happy with the way this series ended, it was perfect, but I am going to mourn the fact there won’t be anymore. Alexandra Bracken is an amazing writer, she has created a story which pulls you in and sweeps your up into the whirl in that is this amazing and horrible world. I like to think Ruby, Liam, Chubs, Vida and Zu are off having an amazing adventure, free from problems and spending all the time loving the fact they’re surrounded by family they created.
