I’m struggling over here on thinking how I can possible express how FLIPIPING AWESOME this book was. Like, I’ve suddenly lost all ability to do words. I seriously loved this book, it was amazing. Never Fade is The Darkest Minds more sophisticated, better looking older brother. I NEED In The Afterlight!
Ruby, Why Art Thou So Fucking Awesome? I loved Ruby in The Darkest Minds; I loved the complete 180 her personality and confidence took and I was sure she was now the perfect protagonist to read from – I didn’t think there was really any room for improvement. I WAS WRONG AND I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW IT. What was missing was giving her government training, a gun, and making her a Leader. Ruby is now on The Next Level – Ruby 2.0. She’s tougher, more accepting or her abilities, more confident in herself, doesn’t let herself be kept in the dark. She truly is Ruby 2.0 now, and I love it.
Oh Liam how you melt my cold heart. So when The Darkest Minds ended and Ruby wiped herself from Liam’s memories completely I was so angry at her! And then when in Never Fade I realised it was going to be a decent chunk of the book until Liam was back into I was again annoyed (but only the smidgenist bit because the plot is so goooood!) but once Hottie McHotPants was back into the story he was melting me into a puddle of goo with every sentence.
“I think I’m losing it—I don’t know what’s happening, what happened, but I look at you, I look at you, and I love you so much. Not because of anything you’ve said, or done, or anything at all. I look at you, and I just love you, and it terrifies me. It terrifies me what I would do for you.”
I just want to put it out there that if the world ever falls apart I better get my own Liam, otherwise I’m going to be highly disappointed.
Wow you evil government. You learn so much about the corrupt government in Never Fade, as well as more about the corruption in The Children’s League that you begin to find out about in The Darkest Minds. President Grey is one Messed up man. It really, really starts to heat up right at the end of Never Fade and That Cliff Hanger is rough!
Bracken’s talent in writing side characters. There are a couple of new significant side characters introduced in Never Fade that are going to continue to be important to the story I’m just going to give a couple sentences on each so you know how awesome they are.
Cate – Is introduced in The Darkest Minds as not necessarily a great person but in Never Fade Ruby has bonded with her and it is obvious she is willing to do whatever to help all the kids and especially ‘her kids’ Ruby, Vida, Jude and Nico.
Cole – Liam’s hot older brother who is a top agent in the Children’s League. He’s controlling and determined to do the right thing. He has a couple of CRAZY secrets which Ruby is privy to. He going to be a massive character in the next book I think.
Vida – If you look Boss Ass Bitch up on urban dictionary there will be a photo of Vida. She’s tough, loyal, bitchy and extremely talented with her ability. She became a part of the little group Ruby, Liam, Chubs and Zu created.
Jude – is like an excitable puppy Ruby, Chubs, Liam and Vida have to constantly look out for. He believes in the good of everyone. He’s been through some tough stuff in his past that makes him fragile in some areas.
Nico – was unfortunately one of the children the government ran tests on when IAAN first started and because of this is a very fragile and broken boy. Ruby describes sliding into his mind as sliding along broken glass.
I feel like we can’t call Chubs a side character anymore, he has changed so much after the end of The Darkest Minds and having to spend months alone looking for Liam and Ruby. He is way, way more self-assured and nowhere near as nervous of things as in the first book. Zu isn’t in Never Fade, but however since at the end of Never Fade they’re in California and in the end of In Time Zu was in California I think they’ll be meeting up probably earlier on in the last book.
Bracken, do you get a kick out of breaking my heart? Seriously? I don’t know why it still surprises me. You did it in The Darkest Minds, you did it in In Time, I’m sure you’re also going to do it in Spark’s Rise and In The Afterlight. I should just prepare myself now. I should just continue to tell myself any never to fall in love with any quirky, original, amazing side characters because chances are Bracken’s going to kill your new favourite character. Again. I just want to know if George R. R. Martin is your idol? Bracken, you and I are not friends.
